COFFEE SCHOOL
A tale of two beans

There are two basic varieties of coffee bean. Red Rambler uses only Arabica beans and only the top 5% of this variety. Robusta beans are higher yielding and less expensive beans often used in national-brand coffees. Arabica (a-ra-bic-a) beans are lower yielding, more expensive beans, superior to Robusta beans in taste and aroma. Arabica beans are generally grown at higher elevations where cooler weather allows the bean to mature at a slower rate, thus intensifying its flavor.

About our coffee

Red Rambler coffees are chosen to give you a variety of different taste experiences. We offer coffee from all four growing regions of the world: Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Each coffee is roasted differently to bring out the coffee’s peak taste qualities.

Coffee offerings

Single Origin – A single origin coffee is always the fruit of one particular country.

Decaf – Because all decaffeination processes can strip flavor from the bean, the decaf coffees we roast are chosen for the retention of their rich flavors.

Flavored – We use an Arabica bean that is mild, without a lot of body and acidity. The bean is full of mellow flavor, which complements the flavors we apply to the bean.

Blends – A blend of two or more single-origin coffees. We expertly roast each origin independently, then carefully combine to create a new and interesting balance of flavors.

Making the most of a good thing

Great coffee is only great if it is prepared correctly. Here are a few simple rules to make the most of our coffee.

Storage
• Buy only enough for 3 weeks at a time.
• Store in an airtight container in a dry, cool place away from light.
• Never freeze or refrigerate.

The grind
• Always grind just prior to brewing. Coffee stays fresher in a whole bean state. Grind medium for drip and coarse for French Press.
• Use a separate grinder for flavored coffees.

The water
• Coffee is 98% water. Use cold-filtered water, bottled water or spring water (not distilled water).
• Ideal temperature for brewing is 195- 205 degrees.

Proportion
• Use 1 level tablespoon of coffee for every 3 ounces of water.

Other tips
• Brew into a carafe and transfer to a thermal pot.
• Never reheat coffee.
• Use gold filters – they allow more of the flavor oils to reach the cup.
